Universal Remote Replacement For An Old Overhead Door

We've all been there. You're about to roll into your garage after a long, hard day at work when you reach up to the visor and click the remote-control garage door opener. But instead of finding that familiar bit of plastic, all you feel is the other end of the visor. The realization hits you: Your garage door opener is a goner. Luckily, with the invention of the universal remote control, you can easily replace it.

Buy a Universal Remote

Search online or consult your local electronics store to find a universal remote control. When purchasing, make sure the control you're buying will work with your specific garage door. Note the type and brand of the garage door and make sure the name is on the box of the universal remote you're purchasing.

Programming the Remote

Each universal remote works in different ways, so make sure to read the directions carefully, but the essential steps are the same for most remote controls. First, you will need to point the replacement opener at the sensor of the garage door. Sensors for overhead doors are generally attached to the ceiling of the garage. When pointed, you will have to perform a series of steps with the remote button to find the correct frequency of the garage door. Once found, the remote will be programmed to work with that door.

More Than One Door

Certain remotes have two or more buttons that can be used to open other garage doors. If you have one of these, make sure to follow the instructions once again to program the second button with another garage door.

Press Away!

Once reprogrammed, the new universal remote will now work with your overhead garage door. Make sure to hold onto the directions for programming, however, in case the remote stops working or you move into another residence.
