Send Dtmf Tones Over A 3g Network

DTMF, or dual-tone multi-frequency, is a system of tones used in telecommunications. It is sometimes referred to as "touch tone," because the system produces a different sound for each of the 12 buttons commonly found on telephones. While most phones on 3G (otherwise known as 3rd Generation) no longer use true DTMF (the information is now digital, and DTMF is analog), the buttons still correspond to DTMF tones. However, some users are finding that they are unable to use those tones while certain applications. This issue occurs most notably during video calls.

Instructions

1. Identify when you are unable to send DTMF tones. You should be able to generate the tones when dialing, checking voice mail, entering a phone number, or otherwise using your phone's buttons. For systems like voice mail, the DTMF tone generated by the button pressed should correspond with an action in your voice mail, such as deleting, saving or replaying messages.

2. Check the volume on your phone. If it is set to "Off" or "Vibrate," this will silence the tones on most phones. If your phone is set to "Off" or "Vibrate," turn up the volume and try your number pad again. Your phone should generate the DTMF tones. Note that even if your volume is turned off and the phone doesn't generate the tone, the number pressed should still cause the phone program to respond.

3. Try to generate the DTMF tones when making a phone or video call (most people who experience issues with generating DTMF tones have issues when making a video call). If your phone does not generate the tones, enter the "Options" menu during the call.

4. Scroll down in the menu options until you see the "Send DTMF" option. Activate this option if not already activated. You should now be able to hear and send the DTMF tones.
