What Are Schematics

Schematics are diagrams that represent the various elements of a particular system. They often use graphic symbols that are abstract representations of real things.

Purpose

The purpose of a schematic diagram is to convey information to the observer in a readily digestible fashion. Schematics usually omit details that are not relevant, and they may add unrealistic and exaggerated elements in order to aid understanding.

Common Uses

Schematics are commonly used to describe the design of a piece of equipment, tool or system.

Subway System Schematics

You can find schematics of subway systems when looking at a subway line map. Each subway line is typically represented by a different color, and each station is represented by a dot.

Electrical Industry

Schematics are commonly used in the electrical industry. Schematics for electrical circuits are prepared by designers who use electronic design automation (EDA) tools.

Furniture Setup

In many furniture setup manuals, schematics are used to indicate the various parts, tools, and steps necessary to construct a particular piece of furniture.
