Wire Component Speakers To An Amp

Component speakers differ from regular car speakers in their construction. In place of a woofer for lows and a tweeter for highs combined in one platform, component speakers separate the woofer and tweeter. This allows better performance from the woofer and tweeter, and more mounting options, for better stereo imaging in the vehicles they're installed into. Since component speakers include two separate elements, they must be wired to an amp in a different manner than regular car speakers.

Instructions

1. Identify the elements of your component speaker system. There will be two woofers, two tweeters, and two crossovers. The crossovers separate the low- and high-frequency signals coming from the amplifier into the proper output for the woofers and tweeters.

2. Connect a length of speaker wire between the "R" (right) speaker outputs of the amplifier to the "Input" terminals of one of the crossovers. To connect to the terminals, strip the insulation from the wire so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed, then loosen the terminals' set screws. Slide the bare wire underneath and tighten the screws. Connect the "+" of the amplifier output to the "+" of the crossover input, and the "-" to the "-".

3. Connect a tweeter to the crossover. The tweeter will already have two wires connected to it, one marked "+" and the other "-". Connect the wires to the terminals marked "Tweeter_ or "T" on the crossover.

4. Connect the woofer to the crossover. To connect to the crossover, strip the insulation from a piece of speaker wire so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed, then loosen the terminals' set screws. Slide the bare wire underneath the terminals marked "woofer" or "W" and tighten the screws. Connect the "+" of the crossover output to the "+" of the woofer, and the "-" to the "-".

5. Repeat steps 2-4 with the other woofer, tweeter, and crossover. The component speakers are now wired to the amplifier.
