What Is The Sony Composite Av Cable For

With multiple devices of varying levels of audio and visual quality, it can be difficult to determine which cables are suitable for which product. For those who do not own a high-definition television, it can be even more frustrating to find the correct cable. Sony products, specifically Sony video game consoles, require certain composite cables to allow users to enjoy their consoles through their standard definition television sets.

Composite Cable

Composite cables utilize an RCA plug and are usually batched in threes: one for standard definition video, and two for stereo (left and right channels) audio. Cables used to transmit mono audio will only feature one video cable and one audio cable. Each plug is color-coded. Yellow identifies the video cable, and red and white identify the audio cables. They can only transmit analog signals, as opposed to high-definition digital signals.

From Console to TV

In order for a video game console to display itself on a television, composite cables are necessary to transmit the information. Each brand of console requires a composite cable that features the corresponding female jack. A composite cable used for the Nintendo Wii, for example, will not work for a Sony PlayStation.

PSP

Most common are Sony composite cables for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). They allow the user to see the display of the hand held device on a larger television set. Component cables are necessary to view and play PSP games through a television screen, but the composite cable is able to transmit music, pictures and video through a television.

PS3

Although the PlayStation 3 generates a high-definition output (utilizing a component cable), a composite cable specific to the PS3 can be used for televisions unable to accommodate digital input. Both the display and audio will exhibit losses in quality. The PS3 composite cable is also compatible with the PS2 and PS1.

Camcorders

Sony produces composite cables for camcorders. Useful for televisions unequipped to receive digital high-definition signals, they allow video or images from the camcorder to be displayed onto a television set where it can subsequently be recorded onto a recordable DVD or VHS tape.

Generic Cable

Sony also produces generic composite cables not specific to any particular console or device. They are used to transmit a signal from one source, such as a DVD player or a receiver, to another, such as a television or DVD recorder.
