Record On Vhs Using A Digital Converter Box

Between February 17 and June 12, 2009, all TV stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog signals and start broadcasting in digital signals. Those with cable or satellite TV services will be unaffected, and those without can still get TV stations as normal by purchasing a digital converter box. But will said box still allow you to record shows on your VHS player? The good news is that it can. The bad news is that it will take a slight adjustment to the recording process.

Instructions

1. Check the back of your digital converter box. You should see three cable jacks in a row--one yellow, one red and one white--labeled under "Output" or "Out to TV." Then check the back of your VHS recorder. You should see a similar series of three jacks--with the same three colors--labeled under "Input."

2. Use an A/V cable to connect the "Output" jacks from the digital converter to the "Input" jacks on the VCR. A/V cables are color-coded--one yellow, one red and one white--so you just need to fit each cable into the jacks with the corresponding color.

3. Find the button on your VCR labeled "Input," "Line" or "Aux." (It should be on the remote if you can't find it on the machine itself.) Set the VCR to that channel.

4. Turn on your TV and digital converter box, then set the box to the channel you wish to record.

5. Program your VCR to record the show you want, setting the start and stop time as normal. Instead of setting the channel the show comes on. However, set it for "Line," "Input" or "Aux." Double-check to make sure the channel is coming in clearly through the VCR before you finish programming it.

6. Leave the digital converter box set to the channel you wish to record. The VHS should record the show as normal. The digital converter box now serves as your channel changer. You shouldn't change the channel on the VCR ever again, but leave it set for "Line," "Input" or "Aux" and program all shows (regardless of their actual channel) to "Line," "Input" or "Aux" as well.
