You can make free calls on your home phone using the ST-1200 and Skype
If you've got your hands on a Trust ST-1200, getting the unit set up is the only barrier to you enjoying free phone calls over your wireless connection. The ST-1200 is compatible with Skype, and connects to your PC with a USB connection. The unit requires no power of its own, and comes with all the software needed to operate it. The ST-1200 is simple to use, and setting up the unit isn't too much of a challenge.
Instructions
1. Switch on your PC and insert the CD-ROM that comes with the ST-1200. The CD will run automatically (unless you have manually disabled "Auto Play"), and present you with the options for Skype.
2. Ensure that your Internet connection is active and click on the option to "Download Skype." Skype is a program used to make voice or video calls over the Internet, and is the primary program used to communicate through the ST-1200. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Skype.
3. Click the "Allow This Program to Use Skype" radio button on the window that pops up after installation. The program, SkypeMate, displays an icon on your toolbar that tells you the current connection state with regards to Skype and the ST-1200.
4. Connect your phone and phone line to the ST-1200. The "Tel" and "Line" jacks are on the top edge of the ST-1200, closest to the word "Trust." The "Tel" jack accepts the connection from the telephone you wish to use to make your Internet calls, and is the farthest right of the three connections on the top edge. The "Line" jack is to its left, and the USB connection port is on the far left.
5. Connect the ST-1200 to your PC using the USB connection. The "Power" LED will light up when the connection has been made, and the green SkypeMate icon should have a gray-green phone icon in the center. This indicates that the ST-1200 is connected correctly.
6. Restart your PC when prompted to do so. This finalizes the installation and means you can use your ST-1200. Double-click the SkypeMate icon (with the phone in the center, the other icon is a standard Skype icon), and adjust the "Speaker" and "Microphone" volume controls that appear at the top of the screen to the desired level.
7. Select "USB" from the drop-down menu in the bottom right hand corner of the page. The "PSTN" option should be selected if you wish to use your phone normally.
8. Open Skype and call your desired contact. The call will be made for free through your broadband connection, but you can use the connected phone to conduct the conversation.
