Hook Up An Svideo Input And Sound Card Linein To Capture Video And Audio

Capture video and audio from your camcorder to your computer.

Saving video and audio files to a compute requires them to be changed from their original analog form into a digitized signal that the computer can read and save. Once you have the signals digitized you can play them back, burn them to discs or edit them with various programs. A video capture card connected to you computer does the trick.

S-Video

Capture video and audio from a VCR to your computer.

S-video describes a format that separates a video signal into two parts: the Y and C signals. The Y signal carries synchronization and brightness information and the C carries information for the three primary video colors red, blue and green. Keeping the signals separate improves picture quality. S-video travels on two coaxial cables joined into one with four-pin connectors on the ends. Many cameras, video recorders, cable and satellite receivers, game consoles and television sets support S-video.

S-video Confusion

Many computer video cards use a seven-pin round connector that resembles an S-video connector. This connector, however may or may not carry S-video, depending on the programming of the video card. The seven pins may carry S-video, composite video or component. Composite video combines all video information into one signal, and component video keeps color signals separate. The manual for the video card explains the programming and connection options for the card.

The Capture Device

A capture card may be installed in your computer or connected with a cable via a vacant USB port. It usually comes with an installation disc, drivers, an operating program and an instruction manual. Many capture cards accept both S-video and composite, along with two channels of audio. You can connect the output from a composite or S-video source to the appropriate input, and left and right audio to the two audio input connectors.

Capture Card Requirements

The installation requirements for your capture card include specifications for your processor, operating system, disc space and RAM. You also need to have a sound card installed to process the audio. Capture cards are available for different computer operating systems and options.
