Pick A Surveillance Camera

Know the style of surveillance camera you want to buy when shopping.

Whether you wish to buy a surveillance camera for your home, cottage or place of business, the market is vast and can be complicated. With so many styles of cameras from which to choose, it can be overwhelming to find the right one for your purpose. When shopping for a surveillance camera, the process involves more than just picking one withing your budget. You must know the style, intended use and size of the camera you're considering buying.

Instructions

1. Set a rough budget for your surveillance camera. While the price of the camera should not be the chief difference maker, it is still important. Because camera stores carry a wide variety of surveillance cameras, having a rough budget in mind will allow you to focus your shopping.

2. Pick a camera that is roughly the size that you believe will be effective. If you plan to mount the camera over your garage door, for example, choose whether a large camera on a mounting bracket is ideal or whether you would rather have a small, dome-style camera mounted directly on the wall. Some security cameras are designed to be invisible while others use their size as a deterrent to crime.

3. Choose between wireless and wired technology for your surveillance camera. Wireless models are typically more expensive, but the installation process does not involve running wires through the walls. If you don't mind the wiring process a wired camera might be ideal for you.

4. Learn about the features of several different cameras and decide which features are most appealing to you. Common features include night vision, high resolution and black and white versus color. Some cameras also have longer range than others. A camera mounted in a building's lobby, for example, would not require as great a range as an exterior camera.

5. Explain your intended use for the surveillance camera to a sales clerk and ask him which camera he would recommend. After you've decided which camera you think you prefer it's helpful to speak with an expert to see if his opinion aligns with yours.
