1. Convert your VHS to a DVD using a standalone DVD recorder. One of the great luxuries of modern technology is that when there is a need, that need is usually filled fairly quickly. With the advancement of home entertainment technology moving from VHS to DVDs, many people were stuck with needing a way to get their VHS to DVD. Fortunately, because of this need, many companies have gone on to produce standalone DVD recorders. These recorders work by connecting the VHS player to the DVD player or recorder and copying the content. The process is very similar to how you can copy TV programs using your VCR. Standalone DVD recorders are very easy to use, but their only downfall is that you will have limited options when it comes to creating DVD menus.
2. Convert your VHS to DVD using video-editing software. If you are going for a more advanced approach, one option is to use video-editing software on a computer to convert from VHS to DVD. Some common programs that you can use are Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, Windows Movie Maker and iMovie. To get your VHS onto the computer, you must first use an analog-to-DV converter. This will make your VHS digital and upload it directly into your video-editing software. Once you have uploaded your VHS to your editing software, you can make any edits you need and then simply go into the File menu and click "Burn to DVD." Your program should give you DVD menu options to manipulate. If you wish to have a more advanced DVD menu, you can use a DVD menu program such as DVD Studio Pro or Sony DVD Architect Studio.
3. Double-check your conversion. Once you have converted your VHS to DVD using one of the two methods, it is important to check the quality of your DVD, and to make sure that it even works. Because you don't have the most professional equipment and most likely are not the most professionally converter, there is a chance that your DVD might lack in quality or that your burner had an error and didn't burn the DVD properly. If any of these problems occurs, double-check your settings to make sure that you are burning at the highest quality, and also make sure that your burner and blank DVDs are dust-free.
