Diy Ip Camera Surveillance

Your family's safety is always a prime concern and with violent crime often being a top story on the national news you are always looking for ways to keep your family safe. Before the Internet, if you wanted a home security system you needed to hire a security company and pay for expensive equipment and a monthly monitoring fee. With new cameras available with Internet access, you can now set up your own security system and keep track of it from anywhere in the world.

What is it?

IP camera surveillance is a system of video cameras that you can set up yourself that allows you to keep track of what is going on inside and outside your home. You can keep track of an infant as it sleeps in its crib, and you can also check to see if anyone is trying to enter your home from a dark part of your backyard. Each IP surveillance camera has its own distinct Internet address in the same manner that a computer does. Once you install your camera, you will be able to control it and watch the images it captures on any computer that is hooked up to the Internet anywhere in the world. Some IP surveillance cameras can work with a motion detection function that can turn them on as soon as they sense anything move. Since you can view images from an IP surveillance camera on any Internet browser, this means you can also keep track of your home from your Internet-ready mobile phone as well.

What Equipment do I Need?

You will need a router that is hooked into the Internet. A wireless router with hardwired networking ports will give you more options. You are not limited as to how many IP surveillance cameras you can install, so be sure to get one for every room and outside zone of your property that you feel needs it. You can get cameras that need to be wired using network cabling, or you can get wireless IP cameras that can be installed anywhere within range of your wireless router without the need for a cable. Some cameras offer special software that allows you to control them remotely. You can view multiple cameras simply by opening multiple browser windows on your computer.

How Does it Work?

Once you have purchased and installed your IP surveillance cameras, open an Internet browser window. The cameras will have their own IP address usually in an xxx.xxx.x.x format. The actual address is given in the user's manual that comes with the camera. Simply type the address in the browser address box and the images the camera is capturing will appear in your browser. If you have multiple cameras then simply open multiple browser windows and type the other camera addresses into the browser address boxes just as you did for the first one. To set up multiple camera views on the same screen just size your browser windows so they all can be seen on one screen.
