Set Up A Home Theater System

If you have patience, you can set up a home theater system. Adjusting the position of the screen and speakers to provide your guests and your family with an awesome at-home experience takes a bit of time and concentration because the elements have to be in just the right place. The only way to tell if you've set up the system properly is to use your ears and eyes. Follow these steps to find out how.

Instructions

1. Pick your space. Choose an area of your home that's suitable for a home theater. Make sure that there's enough room for several people to sit a comfortable distance from the screen.

2. Install the screen. Whether you're using a projection screen or a high definition flat panel television, placing the screen will determine how the other elements in your home theater system will go in your space.

3. Put in the components. Amplifiers, tuners, channel splitters and other equipment go in next. Connect everything except the speakers.

4. Arrange the front speakers. In a typical home theater system, there are 3 front speakers: left, right and center. There's also a sub-woofer. The left and right speakers should be placed so that they're an equal distance from the screen. The left and right speakers should form two points in an imaginary triangle, with the listener at the third point. The center speaker should be under the screen if possible. The sub-woofer is often placed by the seating area or up front with the center speaker.

5. Arrange the back speakers. There are 2 back speakers: "surround left" and "surround right." They should be placed behind the seating area, about the same distance apart as the front left and right speakers. If possible, they should be about the same distance behind the seating area as the front speakers are in front of the seating area.

6. Connect the speakers. Run the speaker cable to the speakers. Don't worry about neatening up the cables yet.

7. Test the system. Make sure all of the speakers work properly. Then, make minor adjustments to their position in order to tweak the sound the way you want it. Listen to the sound while in the seating area.

8. Tidy up. Secure the speaker cables and remove packaging materials.
