Convert Ac To Dc With An Adapter

An AC-to-DC adapter allows you to use a battery-operated device by plugging it into a wall outlet.

You probably use an AC-to-DC power adapter every day without even realizing it. When you plug your cell phone, digital camera or similar electronic device into the wall to charge, you are using an AC-to-DC adapter. The little device transforms the 110-volt alternating current (AC) to a lower direct current (DC) that is suited for your device. You have probably seen universal adapters that boast functionality across a wide range of electronics. These simply have selectors to choose the correct voltage and amp rating.

Instructions

1. Find out what the voltage and amp rating for your device is. This will be located on the specifications sheet in the device's manual, on the device itself or printed on the device's battery. If you're using the adapter that came with your device, then it will already line up, and you can avoid this step.

2. Select the setting on the universal adapter that corresponds to the voltage and amp rating of your device. If this in not a universal adapter, it may not have a selector switch, but you will still want to confirm proper voltage and current, that is, amps.

3. Choose the end plug of the universal adapter that corresponds to your device's interface. Trial and error works here, or you can match up the plug from an old adapter.

4. Attach the cord and adapter together. This won't be necessary for all adapters, but some models have them separated. Plug the cord into the adapter body. Only one end will fit.

5. Plug the standard AC plug into a working AC receptacle.

6. Plug the other end of the adapter, the one with the plug you chose, into the device to power it.
