The Canon 580EX flash can work with wireless transmitters.
The Canon 580EX Speedlight was Canon's top-of-the-line external flash unit designed to be used with Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras. Initially released in August 2004, it was replaced in 2007 by the 580EX-II. When attached to a DSLR, the flash unit can be used by itself or with other Canon flash units in lighting any photographic subject. The Canon 580EX is a powerful and feature-packed unit. These tips will help you get the most out the flash.
Swivel and Tilt Flash Head
When you compare all the technological features of the flash, having a flash head that can swivel and tilt may sound pretty basic. But using this simple feature can dramatically improve your images. When shooting horizontally, simply tilting the flash head straight up and extending the small white bounce card built into the flash head will create a much more natural looking light. When shooting vertically, you can swivel the head and direct it straight at the ceiling and achieve the same results.
Wireless Signals
External flashes could usually be connected to your camera and still function when you used a sync cord. The Canon 580EX does away with the cord and will work via a wireless transmitter. Using this transmitter not only fires the flash but also allows the flash to retain all of its E-TTL (Evaluative Through The Lens) metering. When attached to the camera, the flash will also serve as a transmitter for other Canon 580EX flashes you may be using on your photo shoot.
Multi-Strobe
Use the Multi-Stroboscopic option when you need the flash multiple times in a very quick time. This feature is ideal for sports, news or other applications when the action is happening quickly and you need light. To enable the feature, press the mode button on the rear of the flash body until "multi" appears on the LCD display.
