Wire A Small Surveillance Camera For Use In A House

A security camera can provide a view of an area of your house that could fall prey to an intruder; for example, the garage or a shed in the backyard. Wiring a small surveillance camera requires the purchase of a surveillance camera kit first -- this can be acquired from a hobby store or a home and garden shop. A few tools common to most homes will be needed, as will a length of coaxial cable long enough to reach between the camera and the receiver unit that will be used with it.

Instructions

1. Place the small surveillance camera in the area where surveillance is to be done -- the camera can be mounted to a corner of a wall with wood screws and a Phillips screwdriver, or concealed on a shelf or behind a lamp on a table. Plug the power cord from the camera into a wall outlet for power -- use an extension cord if the power cord from the camera is insufficient to reach the wall outlet.

2. Screw an end of the coaxial cable into the output on the back or bottom of the camera. Place a strip of duct tape over the lit LED on the camera, if one is present, should you not wish for the camera to call attention to its presence.

3. Run the coaxial cable along the baseboard of the wall until you come to the TV where you will be monitoring the video from the camera. Place the video receiver that is part of the surveillance camera kit next to the TV. Plug the receiver's power cord into a wall outlet for power.

4. Insert an end of a video cable into the "Video" output on the receiver. Insert the other end of the video cable into a "Video" input on the side or back of the TV.

5. Press the "Power" button on the TV's remote to turn it on. Press the "Menu" button. Select "Video" from the menu settings, then "Video input." Choose the video input that the video cable is plugged into. Press "Menu" to exit the settings and watch the video feed from the camera.
