On June 12, 2009, full-power television stations went from an analog broadcasting format to a digital one. Many consumers are probably unaware of the reasons for the transition or the many benefits they are now enjoying as a result of it. With improved picture and sound quality, more programming choices and interactive features, consumers have access to enhanced services that were not available on analog TV.
Analog to DTV
According to the FCC, the switch from analog to digital TV was made to free valuable parts of the broadcast spectrum for public safety communications and to sell other parts of the spectrum to companies seeking to provide consumers with wireless services. The benefits you receive because of this transition are better picture and sound quality and the ability to watch programming in either High Definition (HD) or Standard Definition (SD). TV stations can now offer multiple programming options on the same channel simultaneously. You also get access to interactive video and data services that were not available on analog TV.
Digital Converter Boxes
If you are relying on inside or outside antennas for TV reception, you need to obtain a digital-to-analog set-top converter box to view over-the-air TV programming. These boxes convert digital signals into analog format so you can view digital programming on your analog TV. This device allows you to watch digital broadcasts, but there is no guarantee that these broadcasts will be in the original, full digital quality. The converter boxes can be purchased at national and local retailers where electronics are sold.
Reception
Digital TV is subject to reception highs and lows, just as analog TV is. Factors like building construction, the proximity of neighboring buildings and trees, weather and reception hardware can all affect the quality of your DTV signal strength. The federal government has made DTV reception maps available online so that consumers can see what type of reception they are likely to receive in their areas.
Improving DTV Signal Strength
If your DTV signal is not as strong as you would like it to be, check your connections, adjust your antenna and perform a channel scan. In most cases, these measures should correct any problems you are having with signal strength. However, if you are still experiencing problems, you may want to consider installing a signal booster.
Cable and Satellite Subscribers
If you are a cable or satellite subscriber, you are probably already enjoying all the benefits of digital TV. Most providers already provide programming in both SD and HD broadcasts. Some charge a premium for HD channels while others include these stations at no additional cost. Cable and satellite providers must ensure that their analog customers are able to watch their local broadcast stations.
