Photo Viewer Programs

Photo viewing programs arrange images for comfortable viewing.


There are many programs for viewing digital photo libraries. Some programs are free and downloadable from the web. Others are are packaged as software bundles with other applications, and may include editing and publishing capabilities. Photo viewing programs are compatible with a single or multiple operating systems. Some of the most popular photo viewing programs are Adobe's Flex, Google's Picasa, SimpleViewer and SimpleViewer Pro, Aperture and iPhoto.


Adobe Flex


Flex is a basic photo viewer application. Flex displays photo thumbnails in a single row along the bottom of the screen. Selecting a thumbnail displays an enlargement of that image in the main part of the screen. Flex offers a carousel viewing option that cycles through photos with a "next" and "previous" commands. Flex has a slideshow function that cycles though full-screen versions of the images in a gallery. Flex is compatible with Windows operating systems.


Picasa


Picasa is a free photo viewing, editing and organizing program developed by Google. Picasa detects all the image files stored on your computer automatically, and allows importing photos for CDs, memory cars, scanners, webcams, digital cameras and the Internet. Picasa allows users to customize and share photos online with web albums or uploading to social media websites. Picasa is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems.


SimpleViewer


SimpleViewer is a photo viewing program available in free and paid versions. SimpleViewer allows users to create customized flash image galleries to publish on websites. The free version creates a flash gallery layout with photo thumbnails along the left side of the screen with an enlarged image displayed on the right. The paid version includes layout customization options such as thumbnail sizes and background colors. SimpleViewer galleries have arrow icons to cycle through the gallery. Simple viewer is compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems.


iPhoto


iPhoto is a photo viewing, organizing, editing and publishing software application developed by the Apple Corporation. iPhoto's slideshow function enables users to customize slideshows with different themes, layouts, titles and transitions. Slideshows can incorporate songs from a user's iTunes library. iPhoto automatically resizes photos for emails, web galleries and iPhone. iPhoto enables print ordering from within the application and publishing to other social media websites.


Aperture


Aperture is a photo viewing, editing and organizing application developed by the Apple Corporation for professional photographers and advanced hobbyists. It expands on iPhoto's editing and publishing functions, and enables users to browse and navigate a library of photos with a full screen browse function. The browse function includes a library path navigator to move among folders, projects and albums. Users can create customized slideshows for the web or DVD viewing. Aperture is compatible with the Mac operating system.
