Flash Drives That Look Like Other Things

Countless electronic boutiques manufacture odd or customizable flash drives.

Flash drives revolutionized digital data storage and transfer by making floppy discs obsolete. In 2011, flash drives can hold as much, if not more, information than your hard drive, run portable applications and connect to wireless networks. Manufacturers of the technology produce a number of flash drives that resemble other objects. Some of these ornamental flash drives convincingly resemble common, everyday items. Others make visual gags for the goofy or macabre.

Jewelry and Makeup

Ornamental flash drives can resemble jewelry or make up. A handful of companies manufacture flash drives resembling lipstick tubes. The removable top of the tube reveals a USB drive. Flash drives resembling bracelets run the gamut from posh, bejeweled pieces resembling hearts to flexible rubber wristbands. A Christian necklace on which the cross doubles as a flash drive exists, as does a decorative floral brooch concealing a USB drive. Some functioning watches with concealed flash drives are commercially available.

Common Objects

A number of ornamental flash drives resemble common objects like food, toys, stuffed animals and more. USB flash drives resembling sushi and sashimi exist, as do those designed to look like miniature donuts. Canon produces a flash drive that looks like a camera; the lens is the USB drive, and the body of the camera serves as a docking port for the drive. Other common objects that flash drives resemble include Transformers toys, a surf board, tofu, nails, wooden clothes pins, Lego pieces, a small stuffed cat and, strangely enough, a Taco Bell sauce packet.

Music Industry

The music industry uses ornamental USB drives in marketing applications. A Los Angeles based rock band called Killola sells a dog tag necklace bearing its insignia that upon closer inspection is a USB flash drive containing all of the band's studio albums. Technology company Aderra works with a diverse group of musical acts, including Metallica, Lady Gaga, Deadmau5, Avril Lavigne and Killola to record live albums and release them on USB drives that resemble dog tags, bracelets, cartoon mouse heads, lanyards and more.

Other Ornamental Drives

Those who consider themselves weapons aficionados and computer buffs are in luck. Flash drives resembling grenades, light sabers and ninja stars exist. The macabre can take solace in a USB drive resembling a severed finger, replete with decaying tissue and blood matter, while those with sunnier dispositions can accent their personalities with flash drives bearing the faces of wacky, brightly colored cartoon characters. Still other ornamental drives resemble objects such as a mechanical memory key, a Budweiser bottle and gold bars.
