Canon Eos 40d Instructions

The Canon EOS 40D is a 10.1-megapixel camera with a 3-inch LCD view screen and an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Released in 2007, the EOS 40D is the successor to the EOS 30D and produced for advanced amateur photographers. The EOS 40D provides high-quality pictures in all shooting conditions.

Set Up

The EOS 40D uses the BP-511A battery pack included with the camera. You can also use the BP-514, BP-511 or BP-512 battery packs. Insert the battery pack in the battery compartment located on the bottom of the camera. To open the cover, push the lever to release the lock and pull up. Slide the battery pack into the compartment with the contacts facing down and the rounded side of the pack facing out. Close the battery cover until it snaps into place to secure the battery pack.

The memory card is placed in the memory card slot on the right side of the camera. Hold the camera with the back facing you and pull open the memory card cover. Face the memory card label toward you and slide it into the slot, contacts first. The "Eject" button will stick out when the memory card is in place. Close the memory card cover.

The last step before you can use the camera is to attach the lens. Remove the rear lens cap on the lens and the cap from the body of the camera. Line up the lens mount index with the body mount index. The mount index is a small square indentation on the lens and a corresponding square on the camera. Once they are aligned, twist the lens to the right until you feel a click. Press the focus mode switch to "AF" to enable Auto Focus and remove the lens cap.

Taking Pictures

With the camera on, turn the Mode dial to the rectangle symbol for "Full Auto" mode. When you take a picture in Full Auto mode, the camera will choose the best settings for the camera, according to the shooting conditions. Point the camera at the subject of the photograph, and press the shutter button halfway to allow the camera to set the focus and exposure. When the focus indicator lights, you are ready to take a picture. Press the shutter button fully to take a picture.

If the auto focus cannot focus on the subject, press the focus mode switch on the lens to "MF" for Manual Focus. Point the camera at the subject and turn the focusing ring until the subject is in focus in the viewfinder. Press the shutter button fully to take a picture.

Reviewing Shots

You can review the pictures stored on your memory card by pressing the "Play" button located under the LCD screen on the left. The last picture taken or the last picture viewed will show up on the LCD screen. Scroll through the pictures by spinning the navigation dial clockwise or counterclockwise. Exit the playback feature by pressing the "Play" button again.
