What Is A Sd Card

SD cards are portable solid state flash memory cards that are hot-swappable between different devices for instant secure memory storage. They are used by everything from desktops and laptops to digital cameras and video game consoles.

Varieties

SD cards come in three basic flavors: the oldest and largest SD card, the more recent and widely used miniSD card, and the smallest variety, microSD card.

SD Cards

Standard-size SD cards are not often utilized by computers and devices in modern days because the smaller cards offer plenty of data capability for most purposes.

miniSD cards

Newer miniSD cards are most often used in digital cameras and camcorders, and more recently have seen adoption in home and portable video game consoles and MP3 players, as well as in many other handheld devices.

MicroSD cards

MicroSD cards are the most recent addition to the SD card lineup. They are most often used by cell phones and other pocket-sized computing devices.

Capacity

Modern miniSD cards hold up to 128GB of data, with higher capacity cards continually in development. MicroSD cards available to consumers cap out at 32GB, but larger-capacity cards are in the works.
