There are several types of paper for use in printers.
Several types of paper exists for varying printers and purposes. The paper that is recommended for use by a specific printer should be listed within the owner's manual. To obtain the best printing results, it is also recommended users print with paper that is designed for the specific purpose of what is being printed.
Standard Paper
Standard paper comes in a variety of thicknesses, colors and sizes. Most inkjet and laser printers work best with a paper thickness of 24 lb., although any printer paper between 20 lb. and 48 lb. should also work fine. The higher the weight of the paper, the thicker it will be. The standard size of paper is 8.5-by-11 in., but 11-by-17 in. and 8.25-by-11.75 in. are also available.
Photo Paper
Photo paper is designed for printing high-quality photographs. Some printers enable users to print photos on paper that matches the size of the photo (such as 2-by-3 in., 2-by-3.5 in., 4-by-6 in, and 5-by-7 in.) while others only accept the standard 8.5-by-11 in. size. Photo paper also comes in several finishes, including glossy, matte, semi-gloss, high-gloss, soft-gloss and satin. Photo paper typically costs more than standard printer paper.
Presentation Paper
Presentation paper, also referred to as resume paper, is a better quality, textured paper than standard printer paper, as it is designed for formal business use. Presentation paper typically comes in 20 lb. or 24 lb .weights, although 24 lb. is recommended because it tends to hold up better. It also comes in a variety of business-friendly colors, including white, ivory, gray and blue.
Specialty Paper
Specialty printer papers include paper designed for printing promotional and novelty items, such as business cards, stickers, magnets, brochures, name badges and awards. This type of paper typically includes perforations or folds, depending on the designed use of the paper. Specialty papers are often thicker than standard papers and may need to be fed through printers individually (as opposed to placing a pile in the printer at one time).
