Transferring those old home movies and VHS tapes to DVD media is a great idea that everyone should try. VHS tapes degrade over time and you may already be noticing that they’re skipping or jumping and showing small signs of wear and tear. Many people think that it’s easier to use a capture card to do this, but it’s just as easy to transfer those tapes to DVD by using a DVD recorder. With this process you can save money by skipping the expensive capture card.
Instructions
1. Connect your DVD recorder to your VCR. You can use an S-video cable available from most electronics stores or use the dubbing cables that came with your DVD recorder. Once you have the equipment connected, insert a blank DVD media disc in the recorder.
2. Follow the manual that came with your DVD recorder to set the machine up to record media from the VCR. You’ll need to change the settings to work with the VCR, but in some cases the recorder may be ready to use right out of the box.
3. Rewind the VHS tape to the beginning, press play and check your recorder to make sure the light is on. This shows that the machine is receiving a message from the VCR and that it’s ready to record. Rewind the tape back to the beginning before you record.
4. Press the record button on your DVD recorder and then press play on your VCR. If you press one before the other you might miss the beginning of your VHS tape. Once again check the light on your recorder to make sure it’s recording.
5. End the VCR first by pressing stop and then stop your DVD recorder. Add in any chapter stops that you might want by following your DVD recorder manual. This is your last chance to make any editing changes you might want.
