Make A Diffuser For Any Camera With Popup Flash

professional diffuser

A pop-up flash can provide a harsh blue light that is often too bright and can make people seem ghostly white. This harsh flash is also the culpret behind the red eye in photographs. What a diffuser does is soften the flash so you get more ambient light, which means more natural skin tones and no red eyes. Flash diffusers can cost more than $200 but when you make them yourself they cost much less.

Instructions

Making your diffuser

1. Find an old white plastic film canister. If you don't have a film canister lying around the house, go to your local camera or drug store and ask for one. At most they may charge you 25 cents.

2. Measure the width of your camera's pop-up flash.

3. Take the cap off your canister and cut a hole just barely big enough for the flash to fit through. You want this to be a very snug fit so that when you slide it over the pop-up flash it does not fall off.

4. Put the lid back on the canister and tape it to the canister so it can't come off.

5. Slide the canister over the pop-up flash and you're ready to start shooting.
