The best way to learn the Canon 5D Mk II is to use all the camera' settings.
Today's modern digital single-lens-reflex cameras, such as the Canon 5D Mk II, can for the most part take the pictures all by themselves. Of course they still need a photographer to compose and take the picture, but after that, cameras like the Canon 5D Mk II with their metering and program modes can make all the necessary decisions regarding aperture, white balance and shutter speed. If you spend the entire time shooting with the camera in its program modes, you will never learn all the features of the camera.
Instructions
1. Install a battery and empty memory card into the camera. Turn the camera on.
2. Turn the exposure mode dial on the top left of the camera to the manual mode, designated by the letter "M." In this mode, the rear "Quick Command Dial" will select the aperture for the lens you have attached to the camera, and the dial just in front of the shutter release will control the shutter speed.
3. Look through the viewfinder of the Canon 5D Mk II ,and across the bottom of the viewfinder you will see a line graph with a middle point, then -1, -2 on one side and +1,+2 on the other with gradient marks between each number. This is your light meter. The camera reads the light coming through the lens when it reaches the sensor. Adjust the shutter and aperture to change the exposure in the camera.
4. Press the "AF" button located on the top front of the Canon 5D Mk II. This will change the camera's auto focus settings. The camera has auto focus settings, ranging from the "One Shot" used for single shots, such as portraits, and at the other end of the spectrum, the "Servo" feature where the camera and lens work to track a moving subject and keep it in focus the entire time.
5. Press the "Menu" button and scroll through the icons across the top to select the camera setup and activate Live View, only used when the camera is going to be shooting video. Press the shutter release button and the camera will start to record video. Press the shutter release button and the camera will stop.
