PVC piping comes in a variety of sizes.
Making a PVC pipe speaker requires a great deal of gluing and some wiring, but in the end you can have a speaker enclosure that gives you the same sound as an expensive enclosure. The hardest part of the project may just be to find a speaker cone that fits your PVC pipe.
Instructions
1. Select a PVC size that can fit where you want to deploy the speaker. The smaller sizes are appropriate for a shelf system while the bigger diameters of PVC piping are good for floor speakers. Once you have selected a PVC pipe size, you can then select a speaker cone size. It is okay for the flange to be over the side of the PVC pipe lip but the cone itself must be able to fit inside.
2. Put on safety goggles. Strip half an inch from the end of the two wires coming from the rear of the speaker cone. Apply a light amount of epoxy on the flange around the speaker cone and then slide the cone into the PVC pipe. Hold the cone for five minutes against the pipe to ensure a good bond.
3. Strip half an inch from from the end of the audio wire with a prewired jack. Twist one wire each to a corresponding wire coming from the speaker cone. Wrap each twisted pairing with electrical tape. Wrap them separately, not together, as that would cause a short in the circuit.
4. Drill a 1/4-inch hole in the top of a PVC pipe cap and slide the audio cable through, jack first. Apply epoxy along the inside rim of the cap and slide it on to the open end of the PVC speaker pipe. Hold for five minutes to ensure a good bond. Once the epoxy sets you will have a PVC speaker.
