Advances in GPS technology and subsequent price reductions have resulted in mobile GPS systems becoming increasingly popular. Because of this increased popularity, a newly crowded market space makes shopping for a GPS unit a daunting task. Follow a few simple guidelines to make this process easier.
Price
Starting with a price bracket in mind helps to narrow your search immediately. Mobile GPS systems from Garmin, TomTom and Magellan start from around $100 (as of 2010). Buy a refurbished unit for even less. More expensive systems cost upward of $1,000. Decide how much you want to pay, and then compare the features of units in your price bracket.
Features
With mobile GPS systems, size and weight are key. Get to a store and hold the unit in your hand to get a feel for its weight. Also test the clarity and functionality of its screen. Does its menu system function in a user-friendly way? Once you've found one that feels right, compare its expected battery life, audible navigation system, text-to-speech functionality, number of points of interest (POIs) and warranty. If you're buying it for your car, ensure that it includes traffic routing.
Considerations
Pay attention to the manufacturer's map updates policy. Getting an up-to-date map for your GPS often costs more than some entry-level systems. Fortunately, most new units come with one free map update. If you're buying a refurbished unit, be sure that it comes with a free update as well, as some do not.
