Different cameras offer different advantages.
The variety of choice can make choosing a camera a confusing process. Modern cameras can be digital or film-based, and offer varying levels of control over the image for the photographer. The different types of camera determine the way the image is created and the final photograph.
Point and Shoot
Point and shoot cameras can be either film-based or digital and are common for entry level and amateur photographers. The high level of automatic function and ease of control on this type of camera make it an excellent option for fast, candid photographs. Some models have a number of presets and semi-manual modes, which allow for more control over the resulting image. But they can limit the amount of input the photographer has over the process.
Single-Lens Reflex
Single-lens reflex cameras come in a variety of formats. They can be either digital or film-based. Film-based single-lens reflex cameras can be found to cover a variety of film sizes, though 35 millimeter and medium formats are popular. The single lens refers to the lens used in composing and creating the image. A mirror sits inside the camera, moving aside when the image is taken to allow the light to reach the image media. These cameras offer more control over the image process and have interchangeable lenses, allowing the photographer to change the focal length.
Twin-Lens Reflex
Twin-lens reflex cameras have--as its name implies--two lenses. One lens is used to compose the image, and one lens is used to take the picture. This arrangement allows light to move directly from the lens to the film without a mirror to move. These cameras are film-based and usually take medium format film.
Large Format Cameras
Large format cameras are used widely in landscape photography and in situations where the resulting photograph must be very large. These cameras use sheet film held in a rear standard, which is connected to a front standard by an expandable bellows. This allows the photographer to change the angle of the film in relation to the lens, resulting in different types of distortion in the final image.
