Page-scanning applications allow you to use the iPhone's built-in camera to convert physical documents into digital files. A number of page-scanning apps are available on Apple's iTunes Store. JotNot Scanner Pro, Page Scanner, Genius Scan and Scanner Pro are among the highest rated and most downloaded. All four apps are compatible with iPhones, iPads and iPods.
JotNot Scanner Pro
JotNot Scanner Pro is a multi-page document scanner. Its features include onboard file size and resolution adjustment, document search, document tagging, a PDF preview tool, built-in camera stabilization, automated backup scanning and email integration. In addition to scanning books, JotNot has built-in functionality allowing it to scan receipts, business cards, billboards, posters, whiteboards and art. The application has support for English, French, German, Chinese, Spanish Korean, Italian and Japanese languages. It sells for around $1, as of the date of publication. JotNot Scanner Pro requires iOS 3.1.2 or later.
Page Scanner
Page Scanner is designed specifically for scanning books. Its tools include a continuous scan function with customizable timer, batch page editing, folder merging, PDF creation and OCR-to-plain-text conversion. Individually scanned pages can be rotated, flattened and cropped with a few taps of the screen. Page Scanner has support for both English and Chinese languages. As of publication, Page Scanner sells for around $6 and requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.
Genius Scan
Genius Scan allows you to quickly scan documents and convert them to PDF or JPEG files. The application's features include perspective correction, smart page detection, image post-processing and simple document merging. It also lets you output your documents to iBooks and other PDF-compatible applications, and share them over Wi-Fi on Twitter, Dropbox and Google Docs. As of publication, Genius Scan sells for around $3 and requires iOS 4.0 or later.
Scanner Pro
Scanner Pro is another multi-page scanning tool that allows you to use your iPhone, iPad or iPod like a portable scanner. Scanner Pro's features include automatic edge detection, onboard image processing, custom page sizes, PDF creation and password-enabled document protection. You can also move, delete and reorient individual pages within a document, combine pages from different documents, send your scans over email and share them on places like Dropbox and MobileME. Scanner Pro sells for around $7 and requires iOS 3.0 or later, as of publication.
