Digital radio
is a technology that carries information in a digital signal via a digital modulation broadcasting method. This technology is commonly used to broadcast radio stations over the Internet and is often referred to as Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).
Sound Quality
Digital radio is not affected by atmospheric conditions or electrical interference like traditional radio signals. The quality is unmatched by any other broadcasting method, as the output contains no hiss, crackling or fading effects.
Variety
Digital radio allows a broadcaster to transmit many stations at a time, which allows for a much wider selection of music. The average digital radio listener has twice as many stations to choose from as a conventional radio listener.
Radio Text
Digital radio allows for the use of text to be broadcast within its signal. This means that you will be able to see information about the current song, such as title, artist and running length. The ability to transmit text also lets you view up-to-the-minute news and sports scores.
Program Guide
Some digital radio receivers are equipped with an electronic program guide, which allows you to program your favorite songs. You can create your very own "station" that is comprised of music that you hand-select.
Control
Newer models of digital radio receivers will allow you to pause, rewind and fast-forward the station you are listening to. This level of control will also let you program the radio to record a station at a future time.
Ease of Use
Digital radios are remarkable easy to use and offer many interface improvements over conventional radios. Tuning is accomplished by simply selecting the name of the station you wish to listen to. You no longer have to remember station frequency numbers, as stations are listed on the display in an order you establish.
No Re-tuning
Some conventional radio stations need to be re-tuned, especially if you are traveling in a car and the signal is weak. Digital radios never have to be re-tuned, because the receiver constantly monitors the quality of the signal and automatically adjusts it to its maximum strength.
