iPhones can read and play a wide range of multimedia file types due to the large number of content options available through iTunes. MPEG-4 multimedia files often contain both audio and video content that can be viewed and stored on an iPhone. The iTunes store uses this container format for music, audiobooks, podcasts and some videos allowing you to download an .MP4 file directly into your phone's content library. To obtain video .MP4 files on your iPhone 3G, you can email the files to the email address configured on your iPhone or have another smart phone user MMS (multimedia messaging service) message you the .MP4 file.
Instructions
Audio .MP4 Files
1. Tap the iTunes icon on your iPhone 3G home screen.
2. Search the iTunes library by tapping the "Search" icon at the bottom of the navigation menu. Type in the .MP4 content you want to download. A list of search results will appear separated by content type.
3. Tap the name of the audio file you want to download. Click "Download" or "Buy" next to the item. The download will begin and can be viewed by clicking the "More" menu in the bottom right corner.
4. Tap the iPod icon on your desktop once the download is complete. All .MP4 audio files downloaded to your phone will be saved in your iTunes music library, which is accessed through the iPod icon.

5. Open your email account on your computer. Attach the .MP4 video file to the email by clicking "Attach" and locating the file on your computer. Enter your own email address in the recipients field. Click "Send" once the attachment is finished loading.
6. Open the email from your iPhone. Click the attachment at the bottom of your email window. The attachment will open in a new window.
7. Click the "Play" button to start the .MP4 video file.

8. Tap the "iTunes" app on your iPhone desktop. You can also access iTunes from your computer and sync your downloads to your iPhone via USB.
9. Search for the .MP4 video you want to download by tapping the "Search" icon at the bottom of the screen.
10. Type in the name of the video and click "Go." A list of video search results will appear. Tap the video you want to download.
11. Tap the button to the right of the title containing the price of the video or the word "Free." You will be prompted for your iTunes password. Enter your password and click "Ok." Your download will begin immediately and save to your music/video library. Sync your iPhone to your computer using your USB cable.
