One of the many advantages of digital photography is the ease with which you can store images on your camera's memory or an external memory card such an xD card. If your memory card breaks, is lost, or becomes corrupted, however, recovering the images requires some specialized software and a way to read the card--either a direct card reader or a camera that can be connected to the computer.
Instructions
1. Turn off your camera and remove the memory card until you have time to begin the card recovery. This will prevent you from accidentally writing over or using the corrupted card further.
2. Download and install an xD card recovery program. There are many card recovery programs available; they will differ in price and levels of effectiveness. You may need to download several programs before one will work to get the images off of your card. Start the program.
3. Place the memory card in your camera or card reader and connect the device to your computer. Turn on the card reader and camera so that the device is now recognized.
4. Use the software to select your card or device. You may be asked to select a target folder to store any recovered data. Once you have completed the software's requirements, run the software to begin image recovery.
5. Format your memory card once the images have been recovered. This can be done by placing the card in your camera and using the "Format" option, which will vary based on your make and model of camera. This may return the card to a usable state, although you may wish to back up images on the card often for security.
