The Compatibility Of Mapsend

MapSend caters to Windows computers from circa 2003.

Since its founding in 1986, the Magellan GPS navigation company has filed more than 200 patents in the area of global positioning system technology. Among these innovations, the MapSend software suite allows you to read and write waypoints, tracks and routes on your computer and transfer this information to your Magellan GPS device. MapSend software only works with certain PC operating systems and the files it creates only work on some Magellan GPS products.

MapSend WorldWide Basemap

Magellan's MapSend WorldWide Basemap software lets you create a basemap for any region of the world, adding reference map coverage not provided by built-in GPS maps. Map features added by this software include highways, waterways, railways, boundaries, shorelines and basic topography contours. This software runs on the Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP and NT4 operating platform. It requires 64 MB of RAM, a 100 MHz or higher processor, a VGA video card and a CD-ROM drive.

MapSend Topo

Like WorldWide Basemap, Magellan's MapSend Topo software adds additional information to preexisting maps, but it focuses on detailed topographical data. This program adds elevations, trails, lakes, rivers, coastlines and recreational areas to your existing GPS maps. For optimum compatibility, Magellan MapSend Topo needs 32 MB of RAM, a 100 MHz or higher processor, a VGA video card and a CD-ROM drive. Microsoft Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0 platforms support this software.

Compatible Devices

Map data exported by the MapSend software suite works with the Magellan Meridian series of handheld GPS devices via the use of an SD memory card. The MapSend native file format, a proprietary Magellan format, is also compatible with the Magellan SporTrak Color, SporTrak Pro and SporTrak Map GPS products.

Considerations

Originally released in 2003, Magellan's MapSend software products are compatible with now-discontinued GPS devices; though MapSend still works with these devices, it does not work with modern Magellan GPS products. MapSend may not run correctly on PCs with operating systems newer than Windows XP, including Windows Vista. Magellan recommends using Microsoft's Program Compatibility Wizard to remedy compatibility issues. In addition to the software and a compatible GPS, you'll need a Magellan PC cable as well as a computer equipped with a serial communication port and mouse to properly use MapSend programs. Some GPS units may also require an SD card adapter.
