USB cable for a fishfinder connection.
A fishfinder is the generic term for an electronic sonar device that mounts on a fishing boat. Equipped with an LCD panel, fishfinders display underwater topography and fish movement. Some units are so sensitive they can display the activity of specific fish species. Fishfinders are manufactured by numerous companies, including Eagle, Lowrance, Garmin and Humminbird. Many models can be connected to a laptop for downloading data such as waterway maps. Depending on the age of the fishfinder, the connection typically requires either a serial or USB cable. Older fishfinders can be hooked up with a serial-to-USB adapter.
Instructions
1. Eject the laptop's CD-ROM tray and insert the software CD that comes with the fishfinder. Close the tray.
2. Click the advance or prompt buttons that appear on your laptop screen when the CD begins automatic playback. This installs the software on your computer so it can communicate with the fishfinder. Restart the laptop when the CD finishes.
3. Plug in the appropriate data cable to the port on the edge or back of the fishfinder, either a serial port on older models or a USB port.
4. Connect the other end of the cable directly to the laptop if using a USB port, or connect the other end of a serial cable to the serial port on an adapter.
5. Hook up the USB cable from the USB port on your serial-to-USB adapter and plug in the other end to any USB port on the laptop.
