Transfer Protected VHS to DVD
With the emergence of higher-quality DVD technology, the VHS format for videos has become obsolete. VHS is a less concise method of video playback and is more prone to breakdown from overuse. One form of VHS tapes have technology designed to prevent the video from being copied. If you don't wish to purchase a digital copy of a protected VHS or if it cannot be found, you can transfer the VHS to DVD with the use of a capture card.
Instructions
1. Connect the capture card to your hard drive, either by inserting it into an available PCI slot at the back of your computer or by using a USB cord for an external card. Install the accompanying software to your computer. Since you will be recording the VHS tapes onto your hard drive in AVI format, configure the capture card to a high-quality setting (720x480).
2. In order to bypass Macrovision's analog copy protection, you must use a video stabilizer or a video enhancer. This will filter out the Macrovision and allow you to record video from a protected VHS tape. Connect the VHS player to the filtering device using an S-video cable or a cable with RCA connectors. Then connect the device to your capture card with a second S-video cable or cable with RCA connectors.
3. Begin recording with the capture card's media application and play the tape. The video should appear on your screen. Monitor the size of the file and stop recording when the tape finishes.
4. Save the AVI file and burn it onto a blank DVD-R using the appropriate conversion software.
