Careers in photojournalism depend on the collection, editing and presentation of images for news sources. Similar to how a writer depends on his writing tools, a photojournalist relies on his camera to record and develop images, which are then used to present a story. Traditional photojournalists made use of film SLR and range finder cameras; however, DSLRs have become an increasingly popular tool due to the flexibility and range of options they provide.
Easy Photo Storage
Digital cameras use a number of different flash-type storage cards that slip in and out of the camera. Consumer-oriented cameras typically use SD or SDHC cards, while professional DSLRs use compact flash cards. These cards come in a variety of different storage sizes, with some capable of holding thousands of photos. Photojournalists may spend a couple of days or even months in the field, and the storage capabilities of these tiny cards make it possible to store large volumes of photos. The small physical size of the flash cards means they take up minimal space, and they're often resilient to moisture and other environmental conditions that typically pose problems for film media.
Editing Software
Digital cameras store images in a number of different formats such as jpeg and raw formats. Many software companies have designed a number of reliable and efficient programs to store, organize and process photos after they have been taken. This software allows the photographer to come back to the photos and make minor adjustments to make colors richer, improve sharpness or remove imperfections that take away from the quality of the shot. This makes it possible to increase the quality of any photos that photojournalists take in the field.
Enhanced User Functions
Many digital cameras come equipped with numerous features, including those that control the white balance and ISO of the image. Other cameras even include built-in software for changing the effects of each image. This makes it easy to adjust the settings before taking shots and allows the photojournalist to be prepared for almost every situation. The digital format is more easily manipulated than film and reduces the chance of missing shots because the camera is not ready. DSLR cameras also typically shoot at a higher frame rate, which is better for shooting action shots.
