What Is The Difference Between Nikon Oem Batteries & Replacements

Digital camera batteries may be Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or third-party.

Batteries for Nikon digital cameras may be manufactured and sold using the Nikon brand or they may be manufactured and sold under different brands. Manufacturers of non-Nikon branded or third-party batteries generally claim that their products meet Nikon factory specifications and perform similarly, while costing less.

Nikon OEM Batteries

Batteries that are produced and sold under the Nikon brand may be called "name brand" or may be referred to as Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Nikon branded equipment and accessories represent quality and reliability to some people in the photographic community, but Nikon products may be more expensive than competitors'.

Other Manufacturers

There are other companies that produce and sell batteries to fit Nikon Cameras. Such companies generally claim that their products are manufactured to Nikon factory specifications and equal in function to Nikon OEM products. These batteries may be referred to as third-party, generic or off-brand and tend to be less expensive than Nikon branded batteries.

A Word of Caution

Batteries of both types can leak, catch fire and explode. The use of non-Nikon batteries may void your camera's warranty. Third-party batteries may be incompatible with your camera or may cause some camera functions to not work properly. Other batteries may offer a quality alternative to Nikon branded batteries, but consumers would be wise to read reviews and do a bit of research before purchasing them.
