What Is A Smart Cell Phone

Cellular phones are as common now as personal computers in the home. Over the years, cellular phones have changed not only in style, but in features also. You can now purchase a cell phone that can access the Internet, keep up with your daily schedule and let you record voice notes reminding you to buy groceries. These multitasking cell phones are known as smart cell phones or smart phones.

What Is a Smart Cell Phone?

A smart cell phone is a cellular phone that includes a keypad (some models have QWERTY keyboards) or touch screen, the ability to access the Internet, record audio and video and access to built-programs to perform tasks like entering appointments, composing and sending emails and reading and sometimes editing documents. Smart cell phones come with their own operating system, generally Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, or another version. The phones also include scaled-down versions of Microsoft Office and other applications commonly found on desktop and laptop computers.

Smart Cell Phone's Memory and Speed

Smart cell phones are miniature computers--they have a processor and random access memory (RAM) just like other computers. The phones also have built-in hard drives for storing photos, videos and messages (emails and instant messages). The Samsung Jack smart cell phone, sold by AT&T, comes with Microsoft Office Mobile, a scaled-down version of Microsoft Office, a 528MHz processor and 256 MB RAM. The phone also comes with a built-in scroll mouse device for navigating Internet pages on the phone's screen. Many smart cell phones also include touchscreens so you don't have to use the keyboard---just tap on the program or message you would like to open.

Other Smart Cell Phone Features

Other smart cell phone features include built-in wireless Internet antennas for accessing the Internet from places that offer Wi-Fi, Internet browsers that offer Flash support, keyword search and multiple windows, built-in speakerphones, Bluetooth capabilities for connecting wireless headsets/devices and GPS features for accessing maps.

Smart Cell Phone Packages

Many cellular phone dealers offer a free smart cell phone if you sign up for a certain plan or package. Shop around and compare packages---most are for two years and you pay less than $200 for the smart cell phone. Some plans even offer a free netbook computer if you sign up.

Finding Smart Cell Phones

Smart cell phones can be purchased directly from a number of cellular phone companies, including RIM (the manufacturer of the popular BlackBerry smart cell phone), Apple Computer (iPhone, a smart cell phone that uses AT&T for cellular service), AT&T and Verizon. Check your local cellular phone stores and major retailers also--Target, Walmart and Best Buy to price and compare smart cell phones and determine which one is best for you.
