Vista Desktop on iPhone
Have you ever been away from home and wanted the ability to open up a file on your desktop, start up your webcam, or look up a contact? You can do this from anywhere for free with your iPhone! All it takes is the setup of a few simple applications and you will have access to your home computer from your iPhone no matter where you are.
Instructions
1. First, you will need to setup VNC on your home computer. There are a number of applications available for free. I recommend UltraVNC (http://www.uvnc.com/) . You will be setting up your home computer as a VNC server. After you install the application, start up the VNC Server on your PC.
2. If you use DSL, Cable, or FIOS for your internet is it very likely you have a dynamic IP address. This means that the number or address that directs traffic to your computer changes periodically. To eliminate this as an issue, sign up for an account at a dynamic DNS provider. I have used http://www.dyndns.com/ which has worked well for me. Once you create the account, follow the instructions to setup a client on your home computer. In effect, what you are doing is installing a piece of software on your home computer that periodically sends its current IP address to a dynamic DNS service. You pick a URL with the dynamic DNS service (i.e. "mikeshomecomputer.dyndns.org") so that you can use that as the URL to get to your PC - even when your IP Address changes.
3. Once the above is in place, you can now setup your iPhone. This is easy - simply download VNC Lite from the App Store and follow the settings to setup your dynamic DNS URL.
4. Finally, you are ready to use the VNC Lite application. Simply open the connection. Just like that you are able to navigate on your desktop on your iPhone! Have fun!
