Use Standard Deviation & Midrange On Excel 2007

A data set's midrange is commonly referred to as its "median."

Microsoft Office's Excel spreadsheet application includes a wide variety of statistical functions that you can use to analyze data. You can use Excel functions to calculate an array's standard deviation and midrange, or median point. To calculate standard deviation, you can use the STDEVP function; to calculate midrange, you can use the MEDIAN function.

Instructions

1. Run the Excel application. Open the spreadsheet that contains the data you'd like to analyze.

2. Determine the cell addresses of your data array. For instance, if your data is contained in the first 20 rows of column A, then the array's cell addresses are A1:A20.

3. Click a cell that you'd like to use to calculate and display the array's standard deviation. Type the following in the cell, substituting in your array's cell addresses: =STDEVP(A1:A20)

4. Press "Enter" to display the population standard deviation of your data in the cell.

5. Click a different blank cell and type in the following formula, again substituting the addresses of your data array: =MEDIAN(A1:A20)

6. Press "Enter" to display the median or midrange value of your data.
