Estimate The Length Of Standard & Super 8 Cinema Film

Home movies can be converted to DVD or Blu-Ray disc.

Many people have home movies shot years ago on standard 8-millimeter or super 8-millimeter film. These old home movies can be converted to DVD or other electronic format using a number of technologies. Individuals and companies providing this service usually charge by the minute, leading many owners of old home movies to wonder just how long that old reel of film is.

Instructions

1. Confirm the type of 8-millimeter film. Both types of film have sprocket holes on just one side of the film. Super 8 film has smaller perforations than Standard 8 film. Super 8 also has a strip of oxide material along the edge opposite the sprocket holes for sound recording.

2. Measure the reel of film. Home movie film is usually on reels of 3 to 7 inches with the size increases in 1-inch increments.

3. Determine the length of the film based on the size of the reel. A 3-inch reel contains 50 feet of film or 3 1/2 minutes of Standard 8 or 3 minutes of Super 8. Five-inch reels contain 200 feet of film or 14 minutes of Standard 8 or 12 minutes of Super 8. Seven-inch reels generally contain about 400 feet of film with 28 minutes of Standard 8 and 24 minutes of Super 8.
