Video Chat With A Camcorder

Camcorders allow you to chat with family and friends as if in the same room.

If your computer doesn't come with a built-in webcam, or have a portable one, you can use a digital camcorder to chat with family and friends using messaging applications such as Yahoo! Messenger, ooVoo and Skype. Video chatting makes messaging more personal because it allows you and your recipient to see one another as if in the same room. Chatting on your camcorder is a quick and simple process that takes minutes to set up.

Instructions

1. Place your camcorder on a flat surface. Make sure it is eye level so your recipient will be able to see you. Use devices such as a tripod or stand to fine tune the position of the video camcorder.

2. Connect your camcorder to your computer using a USB or Firewire cable. Different camcorders use different cables, so refer to your unit's manual if you are unsure of the right connection cable.

3. Press the "Power" button or switch to turn on your camcorder. Set it to the "Camera" mode. This is the same setting used for recording video footage. Refer to your unit's manual if you are unsure change the settings.

4. Launch your video chatting application. Check your program's settings, and make sure it is detecting your camcorder. Change the quality and audio settings if the application you are using includes such features. If your application includes a test feature, use it to test your video and audio settings.

5. Double-click the friend you want to chat with to start a video call. Your friend should see you when the video call begins. You should also see your friend if his webcam is turned on.

6. Adjust your camcorder's position and angle if your friend can't see you clearly. Stay within three feet of the camcorder if you want to maintain clearer images.

7. Hang up the video call when you finish video chatting with your friend.
