Does The Iphone Camera Have A Zoom

In addition to all the Internet-based functionality it offers, the Apple iPhone is capable of multimedia functions that don't require an Internet connection. For example, your iPhone is equipped with a camera for taking still pictures and, in later variants, videos. Depending on which iPhone version you own, it may be possible to "zoom" using your camera.

iPhone Camera Functions

The iPhone's built-in camera has evolved each time a successive iPhone has been released since the device's initial 2007 launch. The cameras on the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, which was launched in 2008, are capable only of taking still pictures. Cameras on the iPhone 3G, released in mid-2009, and the iPhone 4 can also shoot video, the latter boasting 5-megapixel resolution for still photos and capable of shooting videos in high quality -- up to 720p resolution.

Factory-Installed Zoom

As of April 2011, the iPhone 4 is the only iPhone variant equipped with a "Zoom" feature. The zoom on the iPhone 4 is digital -- meaning that the camera's lens doesn't actually get closer to the object, but rather focuses on a smaller part of the image and magnifies it. To use the zoom on your iPhone 4's camera, whether you're shooting photos or video, open the "Camera" and slide the bar along the bottom of the screen to the left or right.

Focus Control

If you zoom in on something, it's often not only to provide a clearer picture of your subject, but also to designate it as the shot's focal point. In addition to allowing you to zoom, the iPhone 4's camera gives the option to control which object you focus on, whether or not you zoom. Tap an item on your iPhone 4's "preview" display to make sure it's the focus of the shot when you take it.

Zoom Applications

If you use a previous version of the iPhone, it's possible to zoom using your camera, but only using a third-party application you purchase from the App Store. Like the zoom function on an iPhone 4, these applications use slide bars to control the extent to which you zoom in on an image. A key difference is that you must have the respective application open to make use of the zoom, rather than your camera itself.
