What Does Convex Mean

An convex mirror

The term convex is used to describe anything that is shaped so that it curves outward at its center. It can also be used as a noun for any object that its convex.

Lenses

Convex---and its opposite, concave---are often associated with lenses. Light that enters one side of a convex lens is "bent" or distorted as it leaves the other side. Carefully adjusting the shape of the lens allows the light to be focused or distributed. Convex lenses are used not only in eyeglasses and cameras, but also in a variety of electronics like CD players.

Mathematics

Mathematicians use convex and concave to describe certain shapes. If all of the angles on the inside of a shape are less than 180 degrees, the shape is said to be convex. If an angle is larger, it is concave.

Mirrors

Another example of a convex object that everyone is familiar with is a mirror. Large, rounded, convex security mirrors are often mounted in stores or other public places to make it easier to see a large area on a relatively small mirror.
