Types Of Av Cables

AV cables, also known as audio and video cables, come in a variety of types. When an electronics user is not familiar with the types of AV cables, home theater or any other electronics setup activities might prove confusing. It is easy to differentiate AV cables by learning their features.

RCA

One of the most commonly used AV cables is the RCA or composite cable, generally used to connect electronics such as gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and other devices to a television set. As with many AV cables, the RCA cable has what are known as pins or plugs on the ends of the cables. The plugs are yellow, white, and red so that the user can differentiate which plug goes where in the setup scheme. The yellow connector carries the video signal, and the others carry audio. While RCA cables provide adequate standard-definition picture quality, some other cable types provide superior images.

Coaxial

Another well-known and widely used AV cable is the coaxial cable. Coaxial cables may be the most commonly used cables for the connecting digital audio equipment. This type of cable transmits radio frequency signals. Coaxial cable is made up of layers with an internal core, an insulator, a shield and an outer covering. The purpose of having these layers is to limit the electromagnetic field produced by the signal to the interior of the cable. This way the quantity of electromagnetic interference through the cable is reduced.

HDMI

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables help to make an audio and video connection as carefree as possible. HDMI cables can connect to TVs, gaming consoles, personal computers, satellite units, audio and video receivers, DVD and Blu-ray players, monitors, and even camcorders. HDMI gives brighter colors, sharp and clearer pictures and images and fast refresh rates.
