Decorating A Baby'S Room With Black & White

Although it's not a typical color combination for a baby's room, you can adapt a classic black and white color scheme to a nursery with careful planning and an eye for detail. Think of the contrast in a black and white silent movie or a photograph as you plan your design. Consider graphic prints, such as polka dots, interconnecting squares and houndstooth, as fabric choices for the room to bring in movement and keep the baby entertained.

Instructions

1. Design the walls. Paint the walls a solid white for a soothing look or as a backdrop for a pattern, such as a black stripe or a checkerboard. Apply a graphic border at the top of the wall near the ceiling, or in the center of the wall to separate a two-tone wall.

2. Purchase or paint the baby furniture white to simulate a shabby chic appearance, or go for a high-gloss black paint finish. Apply a graphic black and white wallpaper design to the front of the drawers, and install black pulls to open them.

3. Incorporate black and white printed fabrics into the design, but use solid-colored crib bedding, such as a white crib sheet or a solid black comforter, as print bedding may be too jarring for the baby to sleep comfortably. Hang a houndstooth print curtain above the window with a black shade, and drape a black and white polka dot comforter for Mom over the chair where she rocks the baby to sleep.

4. Accessorize the room. Position a black-framed clock next to the crib or on the wall. Install white netting in one corner, and add black and white stuffed animals inside. Spray-paint wicker baskets black, and organize the clutter as you group baby items inside, such as baby powder, pins, lotions and oils.

5. Add artwork and photographs to the wall. Place black and white photographs of the baby and her parents in black frames and hang them on the wall. Tear pages from coloring books, place them in a black frame and hang them. Purchase modern prints in black and white designs as artwork, or cut out silhouettes of animals in black and write the "ABCs" in white inside. Hang the silhouettes on the walls.
