Canon DSLRs carry the EOS name, first launched with this camera in the early 1990s.
Canon has been producing cameras since 1934 when the company launched the "Kwanon." It was at the time Japan's first 35mm "focal-plane-shutter" camera. As of September 2010, Canon markets 36 digital cameras from the $109USD PowerShot A480 right up to the $6,999USD EOS-1Ds Mark III. Canon no longer manufactures film cameras.
Digital Compact Cameras
Canon's Digital Compact Camera line includes products that are designed for the consumer who is looking for a simple point-and-shoot model up to a model that many professionals might use when they need a small, compact camera. The PowerShot G11 has both the styling of rangefinder cameras and manually controlled dials for ISO (light sensitivity) settings, exposure compensation and exposure mode.
Consumer Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras
The Canon Digital Rebel was first offered as a film camera, and the company has carried the name through to the digital versions. The Rebel line is the entry point to Canon DSLRs, with four different models. Also in this segment are the EOS 50D and 60D. Both the Rebels and "D" cameras use a APS-C sensor. The "D" segment offers a more robust body construction with slightly improved weather sealing over the Rebel's.
Professional Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras
The top of Canon's camera product line is the 1Ds Mark III, which is a full-frame 21.1 megapixel camera designed for studio, fashion, journalism and other professional photography applications. The 1D Mark IV is very similar but uses a 16.1 megapixel APS-H sensor that adds a 1.3 crop factor to lenses. This camera has the ability to capture full HD Video. Also in the segment are the Canon 5D Mark II and the 7D; both offer HD video capabilities. The 5D Mark II is a full-frame camera like the 1Ds Mark III but lacks the weather sealing of the top of line model. The 7D uses a 18.0 megapixel APS-C sensor and takes pictures at a full eight frames per second, making it a great camera for sports or wildlife photographers.
