Using multiple pumpkins can make a photograph more interesting.
Photographing jack-o'-lanterns will not only create great photos, but it also serves as a helpful learning tool for photographers. It gives you a stationary subject that has to be photographed in the dark, allowing you to brush up on your nighttime photography skills.
Instructions
1. Place your jack-o'-lanterns outside or in a dark room. Make sure there are no objects around the subject that might be distracting in the picture.
2. Situate your jack-o'-lanterns under a towel or a small piece of wood if the pumpkin looks lopsided on its own.
3. Find a suitable candle to place inside your jack-o'-lanterns. A small tea light candle may do the trick, or a larger candle may be what you need. However, if the candle emits too much light the photograph may appear to be washed out. For optimum lighting, two tea light candles will generally work.
4. Position your camera on a tripod. The tripod will help to steady the camera since you will need to set a longer shutter speed for dark shots such as these.
5. Turn your camera on, and turn the flash off. Change your ISO to a high setting and zoom in on the subject as needed. Press the shutter down halfway in order to focus your camera, then press it down the rest of the way to be take the photograph -- hold steady until after you hear the shutter close. You may have to experiment with different shutter speeds in order to create the best picture.
6. Experiment with photographing from different angles. Get as close as you can, shoot from above, and shoot from below. Different angles will give different perspectives to your photos.
