SanDisk Secure Digital (SD) cards are primarily used for storing media files such as MP3s, photos or short video clips. Portable devices such as digital cameras or MP3 players use SD cards because of their diminutive size. Formatting an SD card is useful for deleting unwanted files that reside on that card. If your SD card is not recognized by a particular device, formatting it often rectifies the issue.
Instructions
1. Insert your SD card into your computer's SD card reader. If you do not have a built-in SD card reader, connect your reader to your computer via USB.
2. Click the "Start" menu, and click "Computer."
3. Right-click the drive that represents your SD card.
4. Select "Format..." from the menu. Choose the appropriate file system from the drop-down menu. Enter a name for your SD card in the "Volume Label" field.
5. Click "Start" at the bottom of the Format window to begin the process. You will be alerted when your card has been formatted.
