A sound equalizer is a device made of electronic filters that enables the user to adjust (or control) the frequencies of a sound system in order to achieve a desired sound quality. An audio equalizer allows the user to add more treble or bass to a home stereo systems, car stereos, or PA systems. The sound that can be achieved through the use of an equalizer can result in dramatic changes and effects for the music aficionado.
History
The first equalizers were used in commercial broadcast and film industries. These evolved from similar devices used in other industries such as telephone transmission companies. They used passive components from RLC networks.
Evolution
As inexpensive operational amplifiers became available in the early 1970s. This "passive" technology was gradually replaced by "active" filters.
Setting and Audio Equalizer
To set an audio equalizer, all knobs must be aligned to zero. That is, each knob must point straight up. Once the sound is played on the system, turn the lower frequency knobs counterclockwise: this might diminish the muffled sound, or a sound with too much bass. However, turning the low frequency knobs clockwise will increase the bass. The highest frequency knobs reduce piercing sound when moving them counterclockwise.
Bass
An incorrectly adjusted equalizer can make your music sound harsh and unnatural--especially if it is the bass that is not set properly. The equalizer can be used to smooth the frequency and to diminish (or increase), the bass by adjusting the frequency level using low frequency knobs. Equalizers can't remove reverberation or unwanted echoes in a room. However, by controlling bass frequency, equalizers are able to make the sound clear and understandable.
Adjustment
If you need to adjust your equalizer, call a professional. They adjust the equalizers with the use of a test instrument, such as a real time spectrum analyzer (RTA). It can be said, however, that this method is quite expensive (the price range varies from $800 to $5,000). Nonetheless it is worthwhile if you really need the equalizer for professional purposes, since it is the certifies technician who knows accurately interpret the RTA.
