Use Photo Umbrellas

Umbrellas allow the photographer to control the intensity and direction of light.

Umbrellas serve many purposes, aside from protecting us from rain and the elements. In fact, umbrellas are one of the most commonly used components of professional photography lighting setups. Umbrellas are used to bounce, reflect or soften light from external flashes that are mounted behind the each umbrella. Using umbrellas, the photographer can control how intense the light from the flash is, and what direction the light is coming from.

Instructions

1. Unfold your umbrella stand and adjust it to the required height for your photograph.

2. Insert the umbrella holder onto the brass insert, and screw the side screw of the holder to secure it to the stand.

3. Install the flash onto the flash shoe located on the top of the umbrella holder. To do this, align the contacts on the bottom of your flash and insert it into the shoe. Tighten the small thumbscrew on the side to attach the flash.

4. Mount the umbrella to the umbrella holder by inserting the stem of the umbrella into the hole in the holder. Tighten the knob on the side of the holder to hold the umbrella firmly in place.

5. Adjust the position of your flash by loosening the thumbscrew on the umbrella holder. Position the flash so that it is pointing inwards, directly towards the center of the umbrella---there shouldn't be a large space between the umbrella and the flash.

6. Place the umbrella setup on the left, or right of your subject, depending on the lighting you wish to achieve. You can use several different types of umbrellas and positions of umbrellas to get the desired effect for your photograph.
